A wildfire in New Mexico has cancelled a trip to Philmont Scout Ranch for 15 Boys Scouts from Rome Troop 113 and their six adult Scout leaders. A wildfire that has charred over 36,000 acres has prompted the Boys Scouts of America to shut down all backcountry treks until at least July 14.
Brinson Askew Berry partner Andy Davis, a leader with Troop 113 said they are trying to figure out an alternative trip.
"The good news is that almost all of these young men are young enough to have an opportunity to go again in the next year or two," Davis said.
"Right now we're looking at all of our options," Davis said.
The trip was to include a flight to Denver followed by a camping expedition at Canyon City, Colorado and camping at the Echo River campground, followed by a tour of the Royal Gorge and rafting on the Arkansas River before going to Philmont.
